Meet Mikel Hicks, 2024 Michelle Obama Award Recipient

Mikel Hicks, a native of Annapolis, MD, is deeply rooted in the DMV area and takes immense pride in her local community. Her most cherished role is that of a mother to a remarkable 16-year-old honors student and athlete, a responsibility she regards as her greatest achievement. Professionally, Mikel has made significant strides as the inaugural Director of Fair Practices for the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs. In this pioneering position, she is dedicated to creating a diversified and inclusive workplace, diligently working to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Mikel’s commitment to community service and local engagement is exemplified by her graduation from the Anne Arundel County 29th Citizens Police Academy in 2022. This program enhanced her understanding of law enforcement procedures, self-defense, and the legal system, fostering stronger bonds between the community and the police. Her dedication extends beyond her professional endeavors to her voluntary involvement as a Cross Country and Outdoor Track Coach, and as an inspiring #BePresent Mentor for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education Program, leveraging her experience as an alumna of Glen Burnie High School. Currently, she is refining her leadership skills as a participant in the Leadership Anne Arundel Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA24), with graduation slated for June 2024.

Mikel Hicks is soon to be honored with a prestigious award at the Anne Arundel County 2024 ‘Michelle Obama Awards’. This accolade, presented by County Executive Steuart Pittman and The Caucus of African American Leaders in honor of Women’s History Month, recognizes her impactful advocacy for equity, diversity, and inclusion. This award is a testament to her unwavering commitment to both her professional responsibilities and her community engagements, celebrating her as a woman who embodies and champions these vital principles.
